Irish Rack Up 20 Runs in Victory over Wheatland

SPRINGFIELD, MO -- The Springfield Catholic softball team erupted for eight runs in the second inning and overcame an early deficit to turn back visiting Wheatland, 20-8, to sweep the season series against the Mules.

Makenna Phipps got the start in the circle and went two innings, while allowing just four hits and three earned runs. Katie Galligos then came on in relief in the third and fanned four while surrendering just one hit the rest of the way to earn the victory.

Meanwhile, the Lady Irish collected 19 walks to spark the comeback, including five by Shelby Kindhart, four by Galligos and three by Hannah Holum to keep the line moving and complete the victory. Holum, Kindhart and Larissa Holland drove in three runs apiece. Nine different Irish players scored runs, including three apiece from Holum, Sarah Stokes and Caroline Nelson.

Catholic added to its lead in the third by tacking on four more runs and put things out of reach with a five-run fourth. Galligos pitched a 1-2-3 fifth inning to put the run-rule into effect and give SCHS the victory.

The team's 20 runs was a new high-water mark

Catholic topped Wheatland, 11-1, earlier this season, and earned the series sweep. The squad has four regular-season games still on the slate before district play gets underway the first week of May.
