Irish take down Mt'neers

Irish take down Mt'neers

MT. VERNON, MO  -- The Irish traveled to Mt. Vernon to take on the Mt'neers; a team they faced in the State quarterfinals just three seasons ago. But unlike 2018, the Irish would come away with the win.

The Mt'neers took the ball after the opening kickoff and chiseled off 68 yards on 11 plays, putting the first 6 points of the contest on the board. Things didn't look promising on the ensuing kickoff after a fumble on the return gave Mt. Vernon the ball on the Irish 22 yard line. The Irish answered with a forced turnover of their own, taking the ball back with 3:52 remaining in the first quarter. The Irish drive would stall early in the 2nd after an interception gave the Mt'neers the ball back. The Irish defense held on the ensuing series and forced Mt. Vernon to punt.

The Irish offense started to open up and evened the score at 7 with a draw run from 5 yards out by Brandon Ung. The defense followd suit holding Mt. Vernon and keeping them off the board before half. The Irish ended the half with a strong side sack by Josh Palmer and a blocked field goal attempt by Robert Brown. The momentum had shifted in the favor of the Irish.

The two teams would trade scoreless series early in the third but the Irish offense went back to work on consecutive plays. Brandon Ung pin-balled his way 21 yards upfield and the Green immediately followed with a double-pass from Quinn Northrup to Reece White to Liam O'Reilly for the 53-yard score. Brody Riggs would convert what would end up being an important point-after. Irish up 14-7. The Irish would take that lead into the final quarter with the Mt'Neers threatening on the Irish 11-yard line.

Mt. Vernon would punch the ball across the goal line but incurred a 15-yard penalty that would turn the point-after into a 35-yard attempt. That PAT would sail right and allow the Irish to maintin a 1-point lead. The Mt'Neers would get the ball back on the following drive after a tipped pass landed in their hands. The Irish D stepped up big, immediately answering with a sack from Robert Brown and Evan Kilmer. Evan Kilmer rushed another Mt'Neer pass and forced Mt. Vernon to punt.

The Irish stubbed their toe on the very next play fumbling and giving the Mt'Neers the ball back on the Irish 15. The Irish Defense again answered, holding Mt. Vernon on 3-plays forcing another FG attempt; this time from 28-yards. The kick was up but once again not good, sailing right of the uprights. With 7 minutes remaining, the Irish offense went to work but stalled on their own 47. A Liam O'Reilly punt would pin the Mt'Neers on their own 4 yard line.

The Mt'Neers moved the ball to near mid-field but ultimately ran out of time and the Irish D held strong. 14-13 final.
